The hard facts are that the only performance improvement the new car has is braking. THe hatch 70-0 was 153 feet compared with the sedan 70-0 which was 157 feet.
Since the old sedan outsold it 3 to 1 Subaru will come back to the STi sedan in 2011.
People don't care about how fast the rally car is because that is not the one that we buy to drive on the street.
The sad truth is that the hatch diminished the structural rigidity found in the sedan and softened the suspention and gave it mulish understeer. All of this for a softer ride and more cargo room.
The 08 STi is no longer an STi. Now it is just an AWD MazdaSpeed3.
Where's the proof that rigidity is diminished on the new car? Have you seen an actual back to back comparison between a GD and a GR? There's a vid on here that tests both and shows that the GR is faster on the circuit. The new vids are on my page. If anything, these comparisons are better than bench racing with data from different dates and times.
To show how bad the 08 STi is in the November Car and Driver Lightning lap the STi got 3.19.0 and a Colbalt SS got 3.13.0
Thats right the new STi got its nuts handed to it by a freaking 260hp Chevy Colbalt SS Turbo. Ian Litchfield makes some of the best tunner STis is on record for saying that the handeling in the 08 model is inferior to it's predesessor. Also the sedan outsold the hatch almost 2 to 1.
Another thing that proves that race was a fluke was that the new STi was ahed of both new EVOs as well, and even STi fans admit that both EVO Xs utterly destroy the STi hatch on a road course.
I've seen LOTS of 04-07 STi's get it's nuts handed to it by SRT-4s and Mazdaspeed3's... I'm gonna guess the 04-07s would get it's nuts ripped off by the CObalt SS as well.
BTW: Edmunds got 72mph slalom speed on the 08 STi... That's the FASTEST they got out of a Subaru yet... Must be BS right? lol
Right... Just like the Older Evos utterly smacked the older STi's on a road course as well on every US magazine article. What's new? lol
BTW: The Evo vs STi match-up from Best Motoring had the STi start at the BACK. and It walked both Evo X's, an Evo IX, and an 07 STi.
People are not buying the new model for a reason. Laggy engine, Body roll, and understeer. Not just a bad economy and gas prices.
Drop this argument you have lost it.
If anything, the 04-07's engines lag more... Torque comes in sooner at 4000rpm in the new motor. Body Roll and understeer are EASILY remedied by sways, camber, and susp. mods, unless you are restricted by AutoX rules, which STILL give you an advantage with the WIDER stock contact patch on the new car.
You drop the argument.
