ill check out the movies but i basically understand everything, seele and nerv's planning were to complete the Human Instrumentality Project which would complete human evolution and combine all human minds as one, gendou (shinjis father) just wished to reunite with yui (shinji's mother) and so they used the project on all the protagonists and concluding that life could be worth living and to justify their existence

Pretty much the worst ending for a series ever. I know there are movies, but as a self-contained unit, this ending is a giant boat of fail.
Honestly, I already sympathized enough with all the characters psychological issues, due to the quality of the anime. So this ending was just an exercise in redundancy for me, and a boring one at that.

It took Shinji 26 episodes, a series of world threatening situations, a multitude of bio-mechanical giants, one with his mothers soul dissolved into it, along with a clone of his Mother, the complete integration of humanity into a cohesive whole, the maternal support of Misato and a sentient penguin... to get over his daddy issue. May I be the next to say Elfin Lied was darker? At least I knew what the hell was going on...

First, the creator of NGE doesnt even know how the story ends. He made 5 different endings. It is nothing but a massive jumble of psychological concepts consisting of 4 hours of anime(all endings) which really ammounts to about 10 minutes of concrete psyche paradigms. You cannot understand the ending because it was creation itself, ALL POSSIBILITIES EXISTING SIMULTANEOUSLY. Thats why we dont get it. Ill continue in one more comment...

The antagonists(if they can be called that) were trying to unite the world into one mind, did so, and every individual proceeded into their own "existences", also meaning all possibilities existed simultaneously, thats the confusion. Its just a bunch of psychological concepts with strong imagery, feeling, and religous overtones.
Answers on the linear story:
Angels & Eva=pieces of god/creation, & were attacking from the moon. Impacts were when adam(1st angel) mixed with a similar being. Ok then.

For those of you who grasped the ending but still want to understand a bit more, definitely watch the movie, however, be prepared for super graphic scenes and lots of let downs in the linear story department.

so the whole point of the series is to show that u are valuable, that there is no need to hate yourself and that u cant trust and love others if u do not love urself.this whole lesson to understand yourself and the world was the human instrumentality project? so what were the angels for? what was adam for? and did all of this happen in shinjis mind after he entered the secret chamber with mitsuragi and the doctor? why was there actually fighting in this series?and what has been accomplished?
