Not strictly true. MS just jumped on the IBM juggernaut and were propelled by that connection to their current position. If IBM had given the OS tender to someone else the IT landscape would be very different now.

Well, regardless of who was responsible for MS' success, or what could have been if everything was different MS has played a huge role in making computers what they are today.
I don't think there would be a computer in most every home if it was not for MS Windows, despite it's downfalls. And if there wasn't a computer in most every home these days Apple would have a difficult time selling iPods.
