It was from around the same era as Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees" album. David Paich plays on Boz's new record. It's very good.

The version on Toto ...( 2 years ago by DrApocalypse)
The version on Toto XX is the original version-- The song sat around from the time they recorded it in '78-'79 to the time it was finally mixed and mastered on Toto XX, although there are other bootleg versions I've heard.

The Minfields Tour ...( 10 months ago by sabueso32)
The Minfields Tour version is really good. Simon Phillips makes it groove and sounds really powerful but this one sounds awesome. I like this one better. The percussion adds a fantastic feel, besides they sing more than in the Minfields versión (last chord before getting started all over again) and the 4 chords last part about "having fun" is an example of the 70's groove. Great stuff.

I once read that Toto told about the "Lowdown"-Part in the end of the song. The whole groove is "Lowdown" anyway. Reading the comments about this song in the booklet of "totoXX" I came to the conclusion that this song is about Les Dudek who was the tour guitarist with Boz at that time. There is asong called "Avatar" on one of dudek's albums and with jeff on drums. check it out!
i would say the ...( 9 months ago by mjfe2)
i would say the song has a completely different vibe to lowdown. lowdown is midtempo and driven forward by porcaro's two-handed 16th notes and hungate's bass which is always pushing the tempo forward, particularly towards the end. tale of a man is much more relaxed with porcaro using one hand for the 16th notes, completely changing the feel.
