He was a very ill man by that time--tuberculosis or possibly lung cancer. He was coughing blood at performances. Of unrelated interest: note the perfect mirror gloss on that automobile? That was done in those days with a brush and skillful application of a linseed oil-based varnish. No spray job of today can equal the depth of color and clarity afforded by coach varnish jobs. That was before autos were spray painted.

Yes, probably. In the UK, as recently as six or seven years ago, there was a firm selling brushable paint: real linseed oil paint; not quite the same thing as that car sports, but the same general system: a color coat topped with a clear varnish, all brush-applied, no brush marks.
