You living in California gives you no better insight into the Indian Film industry than those living in India themselves.
I'm from Victoria (Australia) and I believe that this movie has to be one of the best Tollywood films to date - it stands out because it is a cliche breaker, and the combination of storyline with direction is superb. Hats off to Vikram for such outstanding acting and to Shankar for brilliant direction.
