Paiute Native American shaman Wovoka and the Ghost Dance

The Ghost Dance appeared during a time of desperation for the Native American Indian people. The Ghost Dance started when Paiute shaman Jack Wilson or Wovoka had a vision that if our people would dance and sing we Indians would live again. The Ghost Dance spread throughout the land. In Dec. 1890 the military panicked and massacred innocent Lakota Indian people at Wound Knee while they danced. It is one of the worse incidents in United States history. Judy Trejo - Summit Lake (Tommo Agi) and Walker River (Agi) Paiute and Anita Collins - Shoshone and Walker River Paiute speak about Wovoka. The Round Dance was a traditional Great Basin dance that spread across the land in the form of the Ghost Dance, and is now part of many celebrations. Robbie Robertson sings "Ghost Dance".

I am so happy that my ancestors were Native American and African. Both have went trough hell in this country. However, going through hardships make you a stronger person in the end. I wish I knew more about Native American culture. Take care you all and stay stong.

This is a great video! I am originally from Kanab, I know Piute, Hopi,and Navajo well! I am pro-Native American and always try to get out education of the "first Americans" to those across this country that don't know anything about these great and proud people! We as "Americans" need to educate the younger generation on the true history of these United States, it seems to me that Native American history is no longer taught in school! That is sad...:(

true but look at it from a native's point of view. I'm cherokee, and one of my old ancesters wrote a diary about all the hard times and once everyone in the family reads this its like... wow. 43 people in my family's tribe died due to the indian removal act and thats really sad to know. i actually know these pow wow dances and once a year we do the ghost dance in honor of lost family, its really depressing.

Ok, But to us lot in the UK we have a fascination with Native Americans. Santa Fe, Los Alamos and anywhere else in the US and Canada. Ever since I was a small boy growing up in East London I have made certain I will get to Wounded Knee someday. An antique blanket from the rest of the world sells for thousands. An Indian/Native American blanket will sell for hundreds of thousands.
