At request, I've uploaded a second Ethel Waters song: this unforgettable version of "Stormy Weather", recorded for Brunswick on May 3rd, 1933. She was accompanied by a brilliant studio orchestra including Tommy Dorsey on trombone and his brother Jimmy on clarinet.
The exact recording date is mentioned in the video description.

Absolutely wonderful! The best of 'em all, I think. No embroidery, just the plain lyrics & melody. Impressive. Less = more.

My goodness -- hasn't anyone ever suggested you should see a therapist, or get a hearing aid? Or ask someone to teach you how to type on a proper keyboard instead of on a cell phone?

Ms. Horne was beautiful and she gave a lovely performance, but her rendition lacks the force and the simplicity of Ms. Waters'. It has other qualities, though.

When Ethel Waters sings'Stormy Weather' she is singing a great rendition of the song; however, when Lena Horne sings it, she is living the song.

Ethel Waters was a real woman. Modern singers should take note of her perfect pitch, excellent ability to modulate octaves, and the ability to ACTUALLY sing. We will miss you always Ethel Waters, thank you.

There obviously would be a tendency to compare Ethel Waters and Lena Horne here. But comparison are so faulty. The two women brought distinct sets of powerful emotion to this evergreen. Harold Arlen most likely was pleased with both renditions!

I agree people tend to compare - which as you say doesn't justice to any of both, as they are such great but distict artists.

Thank you for your support. Yes, we mustn't compare! Both Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire are card carrying gentlemen for not comparing all the wonderful dancers who brought distinct footprints to the dance. Enough said. Thank you again.
