SHERYLL: Hey Joe. Hi Kevin.
[Her voice came out as a whisper, but Joe could see that she felt guilty]
KEVIN: How are you feeling?
SHERYLL: Tired...
[Joe looked around and a full tray of food caught his eye]
JOE: Kevin, can you give us a minute?
KEVIN: Sure thing.
[Kevin stepped outside and sat on the lounge chair nearest to the door. Joe waited for the door to swing shut before he started talking again]
JOE: Why are you here, in a hospital?
SHERYLL: You probably already know why.
JOE: I probably do, but I want to hear it from you.
[Sheryll looked down and felt Joe's warm hand around hers. Her hand looked smaller in his]
SHERYLL: [Still looking down] I needed to lose a couple dress sizes...
JOE: So you decided you should starve yourself?
SHERYLL: [Whispering] I didn't mean for it to get this far.
JOE: Sheryll, you can't keep doing this. You've got to be able to take care of yourself, especially when I'm not around.
SHERYLL: I don't need a lecture, Joe. I already got that from my parents.
JOE: I know, but have you seen yourself? Your legs don't even look strong enough for you to walk on them.
SHERYLL: It's not that bad, Joe.
JOE: It could be.
SHERYLL: Would it help if I said sorry?
JOE: If you meant it... and if you promise not to take modeling so seriously.
SHERYLL: Ok. I'm sorry and I won't let this happen again. But you'll let me stay for fashion week right?
[Joe answered Sheryll's smile with a kiss]
[While Kevin was waiting outside, a doctor came up to the door and took some papers from the basket attached]
DOCTOR: Are you related to Sheryll?
[Kevin stood up]
KEVIN: Well, I'm... her brother.
[Which was almost true]
DOCTOR: Oh. I know your parents aren't here, so can you pass a message to them for me?
KEVIN: Yeah, sure.
DOCTOR: Sheryll's in a very unstable condition.
KEVIN: Is she going to be ok?
DOCTOR: It's not a physical problem that she has; it's a mental issue. Her anorexia can turn to bulimia at this point. She cannot be force to overeat to make up for the weight she's lost. She must gradually start eating again. And she's going to need everyone's help and support for that. She should be fine and return to her normal eating habits.
KEVIN: Thank you. I'll be sure to pass on the message.
[The doctor nodded and walked away. Kevin was about to sit back down, but Joe came out of the room]
JOE: Come with me? I'm going to get Sheryll something to eat. The hospital food looks so...unappetizing.
[Kevin shrugged and followed his brother out of the hospital]
[A couple days later, Sheryll was admitted out of the hospital and she checked into the hotel Kevin and Joe were staying at. Every time they ate, Kevin kept trying to get Joe to ease up on loading Sheryll's plate. He didn't want to tell Joe about the things the doctor had told him unless he really needed to know, because he didn't want Joe to worry so much. He was under enough stress. So he watched over Sheryll, making sure she ate and didn't force it back out. She seemed to be doing fine as Kevin watched her take a bite of her dinner]
SHERYLL: [Smiling] Joe, if I eat anymore, I'm going to explode.
JOE: No, you'll just... expand.
KEVIN: [Laughing] Don't push it Joe. At least she's eating.
[Sheryll gave Kevin a "Thanks" look]
JOE: There's still tomorrow. Let's go for 5 meals a day.
SHERYLL: 3 is a good number. Let's just stick with that.
[Joe was going to say something, but he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket]
JOE: It's Dad.
[Joe answered it]
JOE: Hey Dad... Uh-huh... What?... Why?... Guys, I'll be right back.
[Joe got up and walked out of the restaurant. Kevin and Sheryll could see him through the window]
SHERYLL: I wonder what they're talking about.
KEVIN: He looks angry. Maybe Dad is asking us to come back already. Either that or Joe forgot to tell him he took his credit card.
[Sheryll laughed at Kevin's expression. Joe came back to the table after a few more minutes on the phone]
JOE: I'm back.
SHERYLL: What were you guys talking about?
JOE: Nothing. Just stuff about the tour.
[Joe gave Kevin the "Change the subject" look]
KEVIN: Sheryll, did you want dessert? There's strawberry cheesecake.
SHERYLL: [Sighing] Maybe next time.
[Joe paid the bill and they went back up to their hotel room. Joe walked Sheryll to hers and gave her a kiss before he went back to his and Kevin's room. When Joe got there, Kevin was already fast asleep]
JOE: I swear Kevin, you're more like a sloth than a camel.
[Kevin was dreaming he was in the middle of a lake, fishing when waves started rocking the boat harder and harder]
KEVIN: Where's the life vest?!
JOE: Kevin, it's me, Joe. You don't need a life vest. Unless you're going to drown in your drool.
KEVIN: I'm not drooling.
JOE: Sure.
[Kevin looked at the clock and it was 3 in the morning]
KEVIN: Why are you up?
JOE: I've got to go back.
[Kevin saw Joe's suitcase by the door]
KEVIN: Go back? Is that what you were talking to Dad about?
