The Hunter was the RAF's longest serving jet fighter, first entering service in July 1954 and only being phased out as weapons trainers in the 1980s. Designed to replace the Gloster Meteor, over 1000 were built for the RAF and within three years of its introduction, some 19 squadrons were equipped with this formidable machine.
