I agree 200% bro! I've always thought of JR as the perfect choice for the guys. Anyway, Gregg Bissonette did a good job on tour in the mid-90s, when Simon was ill. Perhaps Pat Mastelotto would have done well (speaking of which, Richard Page would've been a great singer for Toto IMHO), and curiosity kills me for Vinnie Colaiuta with this band..! Few people know this out there: Dave Weckl was supposed to be the following drummer, since Simon was originally scheduled to tour only once with Toto.

I had heard that Toto offered Richard Page the job either before or after Joseph Williams. Chicago offered Richard a $1m contract for one year of touring, pretty big money in those days. Vinnie and Dave? Wow! Pat would have been a nice fit. Jeff always liked the drummer for Level 42. His name escapes me. Thanks for the info......rock on!

That's Phil Gould, a magician. I didn't know Jeff liked/knew him, this is precious info, thank you! As for Richard Page, he just doesn't want to be in the business anymore. Went thru drug issues, doesn't want to start over. The guy is a songwriter, not a performer (in his own words). Do you know a dude called Michael Ruff? Jeff and Leland played for him. He's one hell of a singer/keyboardist and would have been a nice fit instead of Phillinganes (who is great but inappropriate IMHO).
I don't know of ...( 3 months ago by drumsport)
I don't know of Michael Ruff. I wasn't a fan of Phillinganes. Like you say, he is a talent, but I prefer the Toto sound rather than an international sound. In addition to JR Robinson, did you know that David Paich also wanted Eric Martin to sing lead? I'm presuming this was right before Bobby returned to the group. Thanks for the info.
So, 1st of all ...( 3 months ago by mirzamarco)
So, 1st of all check out this Ruff guy, there's some stuff here on youtube (although maybe not his best). I knew about Eric Martin, actually Lukather REALLY wanted him to be with them from the very start, but Jeff just didn't like him. When Bobby left, Steve insisted again with Eric Martin, but Jeff had heard of this Frederiksen guy and wanted him in the band by all means. As you know, Luke wanted Toto to be a rock band, but Jeff & Dave wanted a more pop-oriented sound. Thanx 4 info, peace.
Forgot to mention ...( 2 months ago by drumsport)
Forgot to mention to you guys......David Hungate once said that Shannon Forest is the only drummer that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with Jeff. I'm sure he meant in the scope of groovin'. Listen to Shannon on the CD "Mecca". He plays the hi-hat with a variable ride somewhat like Jeff, and there is a song on the CD that is a minor likeness to Mushanga. The cat is okay, but to be mentioned with Jeff?.........I don't know.

Ok, so spelled Bernards name wrong, and your are ???..................probably not a studio musician, or playing with anything but a cover band right ? If you'd like to hear my "Purdie" shuffle I'll be glad to play it and post it. Anyone with even a little talent behind the skins can play those shuffles. It's not rocket science or brain surgery.

Lay it down, prove yourself, ain't nothing but talking shit otherwise, do it WITH a click track for 5 minutes and let's see how tight you are. It's not the ability to PLAY it, it's playing it DEAD ON time with feel for the duration without a mistake. There's a reason that he EARNED his respect, and it ain't by doggin others with jive ass comments.

No need to get your panties in a twist. I've been playing that shuffle since the song first came out when I was 15 years old. Yes, it take a "groove" continuity to fill the bill, but anyone with some chops can swing it and play it in time with fills and not miss a beat. Yes, Jeff is the man, but many like myself can hold the songs and replicate the groove just fine. Lot's of guy's on here that can and do. Everyone play's it, but not everyone play's it right. I do !

Let's face it, ...( 1 month ago by Scootertroop)
Let's face it, anyone with rudimentary skills can learn the "Purdie/Picaro shuffle" and apply it to any number of songs with alternating bass and high beats. Ghosting is merely a rudimentary system if the drummer is truely trained classicly from the outset. I don't really see the big deal with a "Purdie shuffle" If you happen to thinks it's so "magical" then why don't you learn it and post it also. I'm guessing you can't play it yourelf and it just bugs the shit out of that some of us can.

Still stalling, still talking. We're all thinking, if you could do it you would have, only takes 5 minutes, you have wasted that much time typing boastful bullshit. I got nothing to more to say to you until you back up your words.

Scooter... That ain't the point. Jeff took THAT, and Bonham's thing-and added another figure and what became of it is one of the most memorable grooves of all time, period. someone who's taught for 30 years told me, "only way to get that? Practice your ASS off!" Jeff's INTERPRETATION and phrasing are sorely missed by any of us who play. Keltner said "time Right outta Heaven" but Jeff would tell you his "time sucked". Humility knew no bounds with JP. Something to learn from. ;-))

Awesome clip, awesome song. I love the intimate venue, you get to see the players up close. In retrospect, this was an all-star cast of primo studio musicians. Jeff Porcaro plays with passion. I love how he stands up at the end, bashing away. You can tell that Jeff and the others are passionate about their playing, and you can see how much they love what they're doing.
