NICK: Yeah, but I feel awful right now. SHERYLL: You scared us so bad, Nick. SAM: You know your kind of lucky. NICK: Why? SAM: For one, you're still alive, and second, you weren't conscious while Sheryll was driving us here. NICK: [Laughing] How fast were you going? SHERYLL: I don't know. I think I was going 100 on a 50. SARAH: Good thing there weren't any cops. SHERYLL: Hey, I only did that because someone's life was in danger. NICK: Thanks. SHERYLL: Don't mention it. I really mean it. My parents will freak if they find out. [They were laughing when Nick's parents came in] MRS JONAS: Nick. Are you ok? How do you feel? Does your head hurt? Did you break anything? NICK: I'm ok, Mom. My body just hurts a little bit, but other than that, I'm still alive. MR JONAS: What happened? SARAH: He got stung by a baby jellyfish while were swimming at the beach. Sheryll got us here just in time. MRS JONAS: I was worried sick the whole ride here. NICK: The doctor says I can leave tomorrow morning. MR JONAS: Thank you Sheryll. SHERYLL: It was nothing. SAM: We'll wait outside with the boys. [Sarah squeezed Nick's hand before she left with the girls] KEVIN: Is he awake already? SAM: Yeah, your parents are talking to him right now. JOE: Well, that was nerve-racking. SARAH: Tell me about it. SHERYLL: At least he's awake now. [Kevin, Sam, and Sarah sat down and Joe came up to Sheryll] JOE: Do you want to come with me to get a drink? SHERYLL: Umm... Sure. [Sheryll and Joe went downstairs to the vending machine] JOE: You're a pretty good driver. SHERYLL: Thanks. JOE: Sheryll, did you mean what you said earlier. [Even when his brother was in the emergency room, Sheryll was still on his mind] SHERYLL: Yes. JOE: Can't you give me just one more chance? Please. SHERYLL: No Joe, and I don't want to talk about. JOE: I don't understand. SHERYLL: I never said I loved you. [Joe tried to recall if Sheryll ever really said she loved him, but he nothing came to mind. Sheryll never said she loved him, he only assumed she did] JOE: One chance, it's all I'm asking for. SHERYLL: No. [She ran outside and saw Kevin walking in the parking lot] SHERYLL: Kevin. KEVIN: Hey. What's wrong? SHERYLL: Can you take me home now? KEVIN: Sure. Get in. [Joe saw Sheryll and Kevin get into the car and drive away. He felt torn, broken, as if in any minute he could fall into pieces on the concrete floor] KEVIN: Did you and Joe have a fight? SHERYLL: Yeah. KEVIN: You guys aren't going to get back together? SHERYLL: I don't love him. [Sheryll felt more and more comfortable talking to Kevin] KEVIN: How'd he take it? [She just shook her head, and her stomach grumbled. It was embarrassing] KEVIN: Do you want to get a bite to eat? SHERYLL: [Smiling] Yes. I haven't eaten anything all day. [They went to a nearby restaurant and ordered dinner] SHERYLL: What a day. KEVIN: Are you tired? SHERYLL: Exhausted. Where are you guys staying tonight? KEVIN: Mom said we're going to stay a hotel closer to the hospital, so we won't be too far from Nick. SHERYLL: That was a close call, huh? KEVIN: Almost too close. [Their food came and they chatted while they ate] SHERYLL: So how was the water? KEVIN: It felt so good. It was hot and when the water came up to us it felt like getting hit by ice. SHERYLL: You and Sam seemed to have a lot of fun. KEVIN: Sam is so great to be around. SHERYLL: That's why she's been my best friend for so long. KEVIN: You and Joe used to be just as close. [Sheryll looked down at the mention of Joe's name] SHERYLL: Used to. KEVIN: I'm sorry. SHERYLL: It's ok. Wow, I'm full. KEVIN: Yeah the food here is great. [Their bill came and Sheryll reached for it, but Kevin was faster] KEVIN: [Smiling] I got this. SHERYLL: Thanks a lot Kevin. [Sheryll reached over and touched Kevin's hand. They both felt a current run through their hands. Sheryll's palm was tingling when she looked into Kevin's eyes] [Kevin cleared his throat before he spoke because he was feeling unfocused] KEVIN: I think we should get going now.
