Baby Southeastern Five-lined Skink

Uploaded by: wildstar1
Video Description:
Also called a "blue-tailed" skink. But so named for the five lines running down their backs and sides. The males will turn a bright red color around the upper body during the mating season. With age, they will eventually lose the blue coloration on their tails.

These lizards usually grow 6 to 10 inches from tip of the nose to tail tip, males being the larger of the two. They're very colorful as juvaniles but lose their blue tails as they mature.

I'd imagine they're closely related. Do the western skinks tails stay blue throughout it's life or change like the southeastern's?

I'm not sure what that tail swish means exactly but I see the anoles do it too. I think it might be used as a warning or territorial display.

yes. get a large aquarium because they will need to run around and stretch there legs. Then you need to buy small crickets. One thing thats very important is that you have the female. she needs to teach her young to hunt. and thats basically it. Just check on them often to fill there needs

the swishing tail is just common behavior. if there disturbed, theyll swish there tail alot sometimes to confuse you to catch the tail insted of the skink

Cool! I'd figured they might use it to communicate or as a lure for prey. I see them do that alot. I've seen LOTS of babies this season. Got to get some new vids posted soon.:)

Hi! I hope your baby skink's ok. I like the name Edgar, one of my favorite authors.:) I named mine "Opportunity", found it clinging for dear life on my backdoor. It eats houseflies and other small insects I catch in the yard. Just catch a few flies, put them in with it, it'll love 'em!
Good luck with it.:)

I've got a western fence lizard (swift) and she rarely swishes her tail, but it's always right before she eats something... like they just seem to get very excited (the skink does it here with the bug--at least that looked like a bug). same thing with cats & prey, interesting.
Very interesting! ... ( 1 year ago by wildstar1)
Very interesting! I've compared skink and anole hunting, other behavior to cats before too. Cats swish their tails if mad or nervous. Lizards do it when anxious or aggitated.
Cool! I love fencies, have some vid of eastern cousins coming soon.:)
