He began the aria on a D instead of the written E. Many singers have done this, Bjorling being one of them. Caruso was practically a baritone with great high tones.

Remember that "A" was near 438 vibrations at the time, against 440 on a modern guitar and 442 for nearly any opera house orchestra. A Paris alto told me that with the heat they'd finish around 446, a terrible strain for the singers.

I'm not familiar with Vanzo's version of the aria, but I do like this one by Caruso, and even more his earlier recording. Gigli's performance is entirely in mezza voce and very beautiful, as is Gedda's.

Jussi Bjorling has made an unsurpassed version of Bizets: "Je crois ...." Truly fantastic! Too much for most grammophones or other electronic equipment. The overtones are too much for mechanical devises in Bjorlings version.

A journey thru ...( 3 months ago by lovemesic)
A journey thru tenors on this piece will lead you thru the remarkable levels of beauty for this one of the most beautiful in the world of arias. This roster of tenors is lead by Gedda as "tops"; but then on to the next level, Domingo is a giant in the lands from Operatic Lilliputians, to Operatic Wannabees ; and then, finally, there is Caruso (disc overtones not withstanding) and hearing the angels sing.
Truly fantastic! Too much for most grammophones or other electronic equipment. The overtones are too much for mechanical devises in Bjorlings version.
Sublime!
