Sporting the distinctive yellow and black colors of Martha Gerry's Lazy F Ranch, Hall of Fame gelding Forego proved his versatility yet again in the May 18, 1974 Carter Handicap over seven furlongs at Belmont Park. Coming off a win in the mile and a quarter Widener Handicap, Forego (129 lbs.) defeated long time Gulfstream Park six furlong track record holder Mr. Prospector (124), a speedball who turned out to be one of history's great sires. After fractions of :22 1/5, :45, and 1:09 2/5, Forego was on his way to an easy two and a quarter length win in 1:22 1/5. Trained at this point of his career by Sherrill Ward and ridden by Heliodoro Gustines, Forego would ultimately be named Horse of the Year in 1974 for the first of three times. Later in the year he won the seven furlong Vosburgh and followed it up with a win in the two mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. They don't make them like that any more. Dave Johnson is the announcer.

It's never the wrong time to salute Forego!
Dangerous from age 3 to age 7, from 7 furlongs to 2 miles, from spring in Florida to fall in New York: he's the kind of champion we don't get to see much any more!

Running against the best in the land, and winning-from 7 furlongs to 2 miles. Just astounding. I still cant believe that the JCGC is now run at 1 1/4. C'mon, NYRA(or whoever's responsible)-at least run it at 1 1/2 again.

The problem with running the JCGC at 1 1/2 Miles now is the fact that everything centers around the Breeders' Cup, which was not the case when Forego ran. What is needed is the BC Classic to become 1 5/8 Miles, and if so, the JCGC would immediately return to 1 1/2 Miles if so.

A Peruvian horse called Santorin ran in one Forego's race in 1974 and finished 3rd, does anybody know what race is it? Is there a video of that race? Please reply if you know tha answer, I'll be more than glad to know!

in my book forego was the best. i watched all of his races as a child, but i was old enough to know somthing special when i saw it. i have not seen any handicap horse that would compare.
