The fastest human powered bike world record was set in Oct, 2002 at 81 mph (130km/h) by Sam Whittingham from Canada. Since the record was set, it is still remains unbroken.

If they design something with a very small motor and a practical turning radius (the motor should help negate the drag) do you think this could ever be mass marketed for everyday use?
It's an absolute feat of engineering, but surely it can be used for a little more than just breaking records...

Higher than that, Brian. My top speed on my Bianchi is 47.4, and I know people who've gotten into the upper 50s. Some of my friends who ride recumbents, trikes, and tandems have hit 60.

The gears on that thing are more excessive than that of an overdrive gear in a car resulting in low torque and pooor acceleration. It would be the funniest thing ever if you pedaled so hard that you farted then suffacated because you were sealed in a carbon fiber/kevlar box of doom in the baking nevada sun, sort of like your own little gas chamber. Yea I own a mountain bike and a road bike and my mountain bike has decent gear ratios and I can pedal up to 45 mph down hill with a tail wind.

I cracked the 80 km/h (50 m.p.h.) on an average 21 speed mountain bike (as of 1994) on Mount Ousley Road, the Superhighway into Wollongong, Australia. I was shooting past trucks and buses in the centre lane, which were only permitted to do half this speed on the steep mountain decent. Also overtaken trucks on other highways in the mountains surrounding Australia's largest city Sydney.
