A Texas State University student who waited to get a speeding ticket while his girlfriend's dog died in her arms has filed a formal complaint with the San Marcos police over the Aug. 5 incident.
Krystal Hernandez was holding her ailing teacup poodle, Missy, while her boyfriend, Michael Gonzalez, raced south on Interstate 35 — allegedly hitting 95 mph — toward a 24-hour veterinary clinic in New Braunfels.
After their car was pulled over sometime after midnight, the couple said they were kept waiting for 20 minutes by Officer Paul Stephens before he issued the ticket, despite their desperate pleas.
Police Chief Howard Williams said an internal investigation was begun after Gonzalez complained.

No one said we should put animals before people. The comments simply say that the cop handled the situation improperly. As for the importance of animals-pets ARE an important part of American culture and the American family. You might as well get used to that fact. If you are heartless, that's your problem. Decent people care about our pets and do not want them to die needlessly. This cop was partially responsible for that dog's death. He was wrong and should face a consequence.

Being that I dispatched for for a police department for 6yrs, I wouldn't go as far as to say he needed an escort, that totally up to the officer, and as we can see, he just was not an animal person. But being that I am a animal lover and my baby is a mini poodle, the officer was dead wrong for how he handled the situation. The guy was wrong for speeding, he could have taken his info and mailed him the ticket and advised him to do the speed limit to his destination instead of saying what he did.

Me one more time. Think about this. If you committe a crime against an animal (dog), you can be given a $500 fine and up to 10yrs in prison. Yet you don't think it was a crime for the officer to allow that dog to sit there and suffer and die. The owner of that dog need to sue the police department for mental distress, I would. I'm a firm beleiver in carma, trust he will get it back 10 times fold. To the owner of that dog, my prayers are with you, I don't know what I would do if it were my baby.

It was cold hearted and incompassionate. It was plain to see that the owner was very upset and distraut over his dog choking. The officer should have had more compassion and realized that even though he was not an animal lover, he was not dealing the the dog he was dealing with a human being. All I can say to his superiors that dont find anything wrong with his actions and comments is WOW! Maybe they should all take the compassion class.

The cop should have handled this situation better but the dog's owners need to share a huge portion of the blame too.
Without a doubt, the cop should have realised that an animal's life was at risk and written the ticket as quickly as possible. 20 minutes seems far too long.
Still, you can't ignore the fact that the guy's driving was endangering other people's lives. It's easy to forget because no-one was injured this time.
This guy put his pet's life above all the other drivers on the road.

the san marcos police dept. are arrogant and rude.
i know firsthand, when they used excessive force on a 48 women arriving to a crime scene.
she was not involved in the crime.
her sole purpose for arriving at the residence of the crime scene was to collect rent money from the owners--who were the ones in trouble.
she was tackled and beaten to the floor.
the woman had to be taken away in an ambulance, thats how bad it was.

yes, it was foolish to speed and endanger other lives on the highway, BUT, everyone at one time or another has been in a situation when they drove over the speed limit due to emotional issues. This policeman could have handled the situation a little differently and acted as a "public servant" instead of acting as he did.

litigation no ohter answer. we pay tax dollars all over the country to have animal control officers and special units to stop animal abuse.are we doing this for just dogs? i don't think so. citizens are held to a certain behavior on how we are to treat animals why is this officer any different? he just didn't care. my brother is a vet police officer and he said the officer was insensitive to the situation. no way it should have taken that long to give a ticket and get a check on the driver's lic
